About

You're functioning, showing up, and handling what needs to be handled, but your mind and body rarely clock out. You might be replaying conversations, preparing for what could go wrong, adjusting to a loss everyone else seems to have moved on from, or keeping track of everyone else's needs while your own get pushed aside. Maybe everyday life takes more out of you than it seems to take out of other people. You've gotten very good at adapting. You're ready for it to require less of you. I'm Melissa Parrish, a Licensed Professional Counselor and founder of Center Within Therapy. I provide online therapy for adults and caregivers across New Jersey, specializing in anxiety, chronic stress, grief and loss, and trauma. I also have specialized experience working with neurodivergent adults, parents of children with medical or special needs, and first responders and their spouses. You can understand why you're anxious and still find yourself replaying the conversation. You can know you need a break and still feel responsible for everything. Therapy with me makes room to understand what you've been carrying and work through the patterns that keep taking more from you than you want to give. My work focuses on helping you move beyond just pushing through, so handling what life asks of you doesn't take everything you've got, without waiting for life to get easier first. My approach is practical, collaborative, and tailored to you. I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), person-centered and humanistic therapy, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation work. Together, we'll connect what's happening in your thoughts, body, relationships, and daily life, explore how patterns developed, and practice responding differently. Some sessions make room for grief or experiences you've had little opportunity to process. Others focus on the expectations you hold yourself to, boundaries, recognizing when your body is staying on alert, or practicing ways to handle difficult situations without carrying them long after they're over. The goal is to help you make changes that hold up under the actual pressures of your life. My work with neurodivergent adults is neurodiversity-affirming. We explore how your neurology shapes your experiences, recognize your strengths and needs, and find strategies that work with your brain. In grief work, there is room for death, anticipatory grief, ambiguous loss, and the losses that come with diagnoses, relationships, and major life changes. You don't have to explain why it still hurts. I hold specialized credentials as an Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist (ASDCS), Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), and Certified Grief Informed Professional (CGP). You don't need the right words or a tidy explanation to begin. Our first session is a chance to understand what brought you here, how things have been affecting you, what you've already tried, and what you'd like to be different. We'll take time to understand the bigger picture and discuss how we might approach our work together. All sessions are held online for clients physically located in New Jersey. I'm in-network with Aetna and Horizon BCBS. Self-pay is available, HSA/FSA funds are accepted, and I can provide superbills for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
